Why City2.0?
A few years ago, during City Council election-time, we found ourselves frustrated that there was no online venue to discuss local issues that mattered to us. We also found ourselves longing for a central place to find out what's going on in our area. Then we realized that we wanted in - we wanted to contribute stories, news, pictures and heart. We wanted something more than the daily paper, and the nightly news. So we created City2.0, for regular people to have a voice in their community.
Mission
Our primary goal is to provide a fun, open, meaningful and helpful service to the community. We're keeping this in mind every step of the way. We genuinely believe that dialogue, conversation and participation enhance democracy and make our communities better. We have taken steps to encourage a polite, civil, non-partisan venue for the exchange of ideas and expression.
If successful here in SB, our plan is to provide City2 to other communities. We think that'd be pretty awesome.
Beginnings
City2 was started with almost no money (just an insane amount of determination) by normal Santa Barbarans who wanted to make a difference. We are very passionate about making City2 the best online community resource in town and are always interested in your ideas & suggestions.
If successful here in SB, our plan is to provide this space to other communities - who knows how far we'll be able to take it!
Advertising
Yep. We do have (limited) advertising on the site. It helps us cover the cost of running, and funds cool new developments. But unlike most sites, we realize that most folks don't want visually noisy distractions on the webpages they visit. We have kept this in mind as we went about designing the site, so that our ads are both subject appropriate, and not overly obtrusive. We feel that this is a more sustainable approach for City2, and helps us develop an ongoing relationship with the folks who come here.
