Measure B, the Santa Barbara 'building height initiative' (that was meant to lower the allowed building heights from 60 feet to 45 feet) may have been squashed in a late surge of 'no' votes, late tonight (Tuesday). This thanks in part to an 11th hour round of educational (and sometimes passionately opinionated) news and editorial (thanks to the Indy, Dick Flacks, Craig Smith and others).
The semi-final tally, as of 2am (yes, I'm a night owl) is 10,343 for B, and 12,009 against. This has come as a surprise to many of the local political observers, who said on numerous occasions that the flawed measure would probably pass easily because it a) had good funding (don't make me go into how much it aggravates me to think of all the good ways this money could have been spent) and b) there was a lot of bs out there about it (ie. that existing building heights would somehow crush the character of SB).
In other news, Helene Schnieder is our new Mayor elect, Grant House was re-elected to a fresh term on our slightly re-configured City Council ( with newly elected members White, Hotchkiss, & Self).
I'd attempt to delve a little deeper, but it's past my bedtime - and will leave the clever analysis to Nick Welsh and everyone else who will be feverishly typing away early tomorrow morning (this morning).
