I had the good fortune to attend a screening of the film 100 Voices at the Arlington. The film is a documentary that explores the cantorial tradition through a series of concerts held in Poland.
At first I thought, sure, why not, could be interesting. It doesn't really apply to me or my interests or experience, but give it a chance.
I was wrong.
The film was about all of us and the way music and art touch the soul. Even more it's about how it can heal a people who may or may not know they're broken. It reminded me of my ancestors who suffered on the Trail of Tears. Of my friend George, who's family was interred during World War II. Of the way art and music, religious and secular, bring us closer to each other and counter the truly evil that exists in the world.
