Art and Life

Posted by tracey on: Thu 17th Mar, 2011

work, work, work, and then ahhh, this is why:

Today was the Partnership for Excellence conference bringing together 500 people from all over Santa Barbara County.  With inspiring speakers and lots of wonderful people from nonprofits and foundations, the day managed to fill the brain and heart with work to do and a mission (or two) to accomplish.

I was especially heartened by the arts panel.  One of the presentations was from a group called "Poetic Justice Project" whose mission is: dedicated to the creation of original theatre that examines crime, punishment and redemption. Through passionate collaboration of formerly incarcerated writers, artists, musicians and actors, we produce groundbreaking theatre to challenge and transform our culture.

The founder was there, but also two of the actors/creators and it was their stories that moved me as to how transformative artmaking can be.  To find a place where people can leave behind violent hatred and simply be together united in creation is a powerful thing. I know this, or I think I do, but worry, is it enough?  Enough to combat poverty, racism, troubled homes, and insecurity?  Enough to build a soul strong enough to sustain someone during dark times?  The men assured me, it is enough.  The art helps create the Art that is a Life.

So it's back to work, work, work, knowing that by reaching kids with art some of them won't be eligible to participate in the Poetic Justice Project - and that will be justice indeed.
