"To listen well, is as powerful a means of influence as to talk well, and is as essential to all true conversation" - Chinese Proverb
Our President elect has committed to the effort of bringing all of the America's together. Right, Left and Middle. While the proof will be in policy decisions, for people to start thinking of themselves as "One America" we need to at least, listen to one another. Even if we differ, it would be good if we could respect our right to have differences of opinion without vilifying the opposing position.. I know the end result of insult hurling because I have, on occasion been one who got so revved up that I resorted in the end to calling names. You may ask where it got me, and I will have to tell you, nowhere. I don't speak to my brother-in-law, who during our final conversation I referred to as Osama bin Laden! Now we don't talk about anything, there will never even be the slightest opportunity for even a shred of understanding, or a moment of light, or a tiny point of agreement. We will never take even a tiny step forward, together.
Shirley Kennedy used to say, always remember that what unites us is more profound than what divides us. To make progress together, we need to remember to talk to one another, and to listen. Then if we are careful and lucky, we might find one point of agreement and move forward one small step. Change will be slow, but there will ultimately be change.
