An Important Message from Silvio Di Loreto
The City of Santa Barbara is threatening to cut the services of the Rental Housing Mediation Task Force, which has been in existence since 1976. It consists of volunteers who have freely donated thousands of hours of their valuable time to help resolve disputes which are always prevelant between owners, roommates, tenants, neighbors, etc. Their (RHMTF) have prevented more costly resolutions to the problems which were resolved.
Over the years it has provided assistance to tenants and landlords alike, which has resulted in happier relationships and an alternative to litigation. The cost per resolution has been minimal.
I personally know of families which would be out on the streets as 'homeless' without this program.
I feel that elimination of the program will not save one penny in costs and wil in fact be responsible for many additional costs to the governing authorities.
Each year since it's inception, the program has been threatened, but this year is special because the governing parties feel they have ample reasons in that it is common knowledge that money is scarce. If the elimination of the program would be cost-worthy, I would be in favor of cutting the costs, but I honestly feel, and have justification that the elimination of the program will just hide the actual costs and prevent solutions on an economical scale.
Time is of the essence, so please notify your friends and the council members of your feelings, pro and con.
