On June 2nd, the City Council of Santa Barbara met to consider the fate of the Rental Housing Mediation Task Force a public-private partnership in Santa Barbara. The RHMTF has been working successfully for over 35 years to work out disputes between tenants and landlords with a group of professional volunteer mediators. Their success rate during this time has been around 97%, getting warring parties to talk, advising all of their rights and responsibilities, and keeping all parties out of court.
This is a unique and irreplaceable program, that was in danger of being unceremoniously dumped. Thanks to Mayor Helene Schneider and supporters Grant House, and a couple of other members of the City Council who were willing to listen and work to save this successful longstanding program, there will be 6 months of funding with another discussion at that time. Now the RHMTF will have to look for other funding sources to help it survive.
Long live the Rental Housing Mediation Task Force!
