Access to health care will continue to be an issue and a challenge. Here are two links to websites to help you with your search for information about health care.
Doorway to Health is a Foundation of the Santa Barbara Regional Health Authority. Their vision is to "maximize the health status of all residents of Santa Barbara County." They are working to "develop programs to provide affordable comprehensive health care for the underserved, uninsured and underinsured" in our county.
See more information at their website for the Healthy Kids Program.
http://www.doorwaytohealth.org/
The U. S. Department of Health & Human Services also has a great website.
Go there for a webchat on The Affordable Care Act & Behavioral Health. This is a discussion on how provisions in this act will "help ensure that those with behavioral health disorders receive the coverage they need. The webchat is available as of September 15.
You can also find links for information on autism, flu, food safety and medical fraud.

The League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara and the Children's Health Initiative of Santa Barbara hosted an informational forum on the new federal health reform law at the Franklin Neighborhood Center on Monday night.
"What Health Reform Means to You" featured a panel of experts from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department and from the "Insure the Uninsured Project", a non-partisan health policy organization in Santa Monica. The program focused on clarifying the law's key provisions, implementation and immediate benefits and changes. This was followed by a very informative question and answer session, highlighting personal application and reform challenges.
The good news for children is that, as of September 23, 2010:
Pre-existing Conditions: Health insurance companies will no longer be allowed to deny coverage to children seeking insurance or deny treatment to children already covered due to pre-existing conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or even chronic ear infections).
Young adults will stay covered: Insurance companies will be required to allow young adults to stay on their parent's insurance until age 26, even those who are not full-time students.
Coverage when kids need it most: Insurance companies won't be allowed to drop people when they get sick (a common practice today, called "recission". They also won't be allowed to limit the lifetime dollar value of coverage, which is important for kids with lifelong conditions like diabetes or asthma or serious health problems like cancer.
Free preventative services: Insurance companies will have to cover immunizations and other preventative health services for infants, children and adolescents - at not cost to families.
Children can keep Healthy Families and Medi-Cal coverage: The successful Healthy Families and Medi-Cal iniatives are protected so children wont lose coverage even if the state has a deficit.
