Most folks visit Arlington Cemetery when they make their DC pilgrimage, but many have no idea of what or where Walter Reed Medical Center is. The Teen Press decided to make Walter Reed part of their Inauguration Reporting. The day after the Inauguration, two days after President Obama and Martin Luther King Jr. began their National Day of Service there, Logan and Sierra spend the morning there. First they are given a special tour by Gail Cureton, from Army Media Relations.
Then as they are waiting in the lobby for their visit with the commander, they come upon a band of Shoshone warriors who had marched in the Inauguration Parade. They had come to Walter Reed to present Commander Coots with a special photo for his wall of American warriors, a photo of much revered Shoshone chief and warrior, Chief Washakie.
After their interview with one of the Shoshone warriors, Logan and Sierra get to sit down with Walter Reed Commander, Colonel Norvell "Van" Coots. He speaks of Walter Reed past, present and future and of the honor and duty of a soldier/physician. For more SBMS Teen Press stories from Washington and the Inauguration go to www.sbmsteenpress.org.
