In celebration of UCSB Arts & Lectures’ 50th Anniversary, Ken Burns came to Santa Barbara. With the help of the Orfalea Foundations, Ken visited with a small and very interested group of students from Santa Barbara, Dos Pueblos, and San Marcos High School. UCSB Arts and Lectures and Direct Relief International treated Santa Barbara to yet another inspirational evening this week. Greg Mortenson, peacebuilder and author of Three Cups of Tea and Stones Into Schools overflowed the Direct Relief warehouse and the Arlington Theater, sharing his vision for peace in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the world. With palettes of aid wrapped and ready for far off neighbors their backdrop, the Santa Barbara Middle School Teen Press, working with Santa Barbara Kids Magazine, shared three cups of tea with Greg, shoes off, on the floor of the Direct Relief warehouse.
When reporters Lili and Emily were finished with their questions, they introduced their classmate Mark, who had written a special rap for one of his heroes, “Dr. Greg.” Greg was so moved he asked Mark to perform at Direct Relief’s gathering of donors. After receiving a standing ovation there, Greg asked Mark to perform at the sold-out Arlington. If you were there, you know what happened. If you weren’t, check out these videos of Mark's rap and the girls' visit.
Greg is working on a documentary showing how kids are taking his message to heart and making the world better. Greg left Santa Barbara after midnight, heading south to San Diego to visit with the commander of the Pacific Fleet. Thursday, Greg changed his schedule to return to Santa Barbara, this time with his film crew. If you heard the sound of rap music coming from Direct Relief Friday morning, that was Mark rapping for the cameras. Later, if you heard the sound of slurping, that was the girls and Greg drinking tea the way true friends do in Afghanistan.
The Teen Press and all of Santa Barbara owe gratitude to both UCSB Arts and Lectures and Direct Relief for all they bring to Santa Barbara and the world.

"Tim Harrison is a man who has captured and rescued more exotic animals than anyone on the planet, literally hundreds of alligators, crocodiles, lions, bears, tigers and the largest and most deadly snakes on earth. He was brought in to assist in the search for Moe the Chimp in California. Tim has been featured on nearly every major television network including National Geographic, Animal Planet, Discovery Channel, CNN, and others. He's had friends killed by these animals and he's risked personal harm many many times to try and help."

Another night of festivity was held at the Lobero Theatre, where envelope-pushing performances were celebrated with the CINEMA VANGUARD Awards. Roger's introduction to the award explained that the term "vanguard" originally meant the advance unit in an army, which paved the way for the rest of the slower moving troops. In theater and the arts, it's come to mean the risk-takers, those who lead the way by going beyond the bounds of the normal--leading the way. The Teen Press got to chat with recipients, Peter Sarsgaard, Vera Farmiga, Christoph Waltz, and Virtuoso Gabourey Sidibe. It was quite an experience—and a chatty one, too!
