culture of protest: Remembering Paul Robeson
Posted by rflacks on:
January 23 marks the 37th anniversary of Paul Robeson's death. He was, in his time, one of the most famous Americans, whose voice and presence as a singer, actor and activist was globally celebrated--and, during the McCarthy days, widely reviled in the US. In the fifties, his brilliant career was destroyed by the blacklist and the revocation of his passport. Decades after his death he was honored with a commemorative postage stamp.
Current media interest in slavery leads us to his pioneering concert performances of the songs of the slaves. A new documentary on the drug war, The House I Live In, uses his performance of that song. So we'll spend this week's radio show exploring some facets of Robeson's life in song and speech.
