One time Santa Barbarian Earl Robinson was a major composer of politically conscious music, including "I dreamed I saw Joe hill last night" and 'Black & White". This month marks the 100th anniversary of his birth and the 19th anniversary of his death. His biographer, Eric Gordon, will be my guest on the radio this Thursday for a 2 hour retrospective of Earl's work and life. I guarantee that you will be  surprised, intrigued and inspired by the music and the life story ( which provides an intimate insight into the nature and cultural effects of the McCarthy period blacklisting).

Today's revelations about the state of the Afghan war as depicted in thousands of  ground level battle reports provides powerful evidence that the US is fruitlessly intervening in a civil war. Our intervention is wasting lives and minds of American soldiers and Afghan civilians. But the need to stop it grows more urgent for all americans because of its drain on our resources, its economic damage. The house shortly will vote on a supplemental appropriation measure and that gives us a chance to  communicate with our congressional reps to demand that they vote no.

PLEASE FORWARD AND POST Dear friend of the Campaign for Peace and Democracy,         U.S. intervention in Afghanistan is facing increasing challenge, and this week's dramatic Wikileaks revelations -- the biggest U.S. war expose since Dan Ellsberg Pentagon papers -- make it all the more difficult for Congress to keep funding this horrific war. If you use this number, it will add to the Friends Committee on National Legislation's count of how many people called Congress against the war supplemental, so your call will be tallied in two places.  Bob was a cultural and political force in our community for 45 years. He died on July 11. Bob was probably the most engaged listener to Culture of Protest and he appeared on the program many times over the last 28 years. Bob wrote an authoritative report on police atrocities in the Isla Vista rebellion days in 1970. In the 90s he chaired the committee that created the IV peace monument, which serves as a lasting symbol of the peace movement and the community struggles of those days. Now, exactly 40 years after the Isla vista turmoil culminated, we'll rebroadcast two conversations with Bob that illuminate that past and that recount the story of the peace monument. Bob's primary work was as a playwright. One of his projects--a recounting of the story of Joe Hill, the Wobbly bard--wasn't completed, but he shares the story and sings an obscure revolutionary song by Joe Hill in another excerpt from a past broadcast. Most every year on culture of Protest we do a Woody Guthrie birthday show (July 14 is the birth date). We are able most years to feature 'new' Woody material, because of the continuous outpouring of previously unreleased recordings, and/or newly written songs based on his archived lyrics, and/or new interpretations of his standards. This week's show features a recent Rounder 4 disc compilation based on recently discovered unreleased recordings done in 1944 (with Cisco Houston and Sonny Terry) that have wonderful sound quality and songs rarely heard as well as familiar ones . Songs about labor, war, race, history...and since Arlo turns 63 on July 12 we'll hear his voice too.
