Municipal Winemakers to Open Tasting Room in Santa Barbara Funk Zone

SANTA BARBARA - The Municipal Winemakers will open a tasting room in the Funk Zone of Santa Barbara, making them the eleventh and newest winery to join the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail. Each new producer has added flavor to the Urban Wine Trail, which is gaining popularity with locals and tourists alike as a premium wine tasting destination.

The cozy new tasting room is set quietly off the street towards the back of the same building that houses the Kunin/Westerly tasting room at 28 Anacapa Street, just a couple hundred yards from the beach. Visitors who discover it are rewarded with a rich tasting experience - a full immersion into the Muniverse where wine is demystified through friendliness and education.

Industrial machinery, old office furniture and found objects have been repurposed and recycled as functional design. Highlights include: tables with community seating for sharing the wine experience, and an outdoor patio to enjoy the sunny Santa Barbara weekends. The best part, however, is the lineup of reasonably priced delicious wines that represent some of the best values in Santa Barbara County.

Municipal Winemakers challenge the traditional idea that fine wine is of privilege. They work hard to reconcile the reality that wine is a social beverage by taking a light-hearted approach to its presentation. Wine Spectator has remarked, “Municipal Winemakers takes all possible pretense out of labeling wine.” All the while, Muni remains seriously meticulous about the craft of winemaking.

Current releases include the crisp, fresh and minerally dry Riesling called Bright White, while the Bright Red is a spicy, savory Cotes du Rhone inspired blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. Their latest release is the fun and bubbly FIZZ sparkling Shiraz.

Municipal Winemakers is a small production winery that has been producing honest wines since 2007. The philosophy is to craft small-lot, highest quality wines by sourcing grapes from special vineyards in Santa Barbara County and drawing on winemaking experiences in Australia, France, and California. Muni Wines balance old- world personality and elegance with the vibrancy and intensity of modern wine styles.

Muni is owned and operated by one person, David Potter, who is also a member of the winemaking team at Fess Parker Winery and Epiphany Cellars.

The Grand Opening celebration on February 20th will run from 2 to 6 pm. The event will feature a selection of gourmet goods from Whole Foods market.
