SANTA BARBARA, CA – November 12, 2009 – The complete recount of the ballots cast in the City of Santa Barbara 2009 General Municipal Election has been completed. There is no change to the outcome of the election previously reported.
The recount was conducted after it was discovered through an audit performed by the City Clerk’s office that a voting machine had not counted votes on some ballots due to a calibration error.
A logic and accuracy test of the ballot-counting machine was conducted prior to beginning the recount. A second logic and accuracy test of the ballot-counting machine was conducted at the mid-way point. A logic and accuracy test of the ballot-counting machine was conducted after all of the ballots were recounted. In addition, the final test of the ballot-counting machine included a test of the machine generated count of the precinct manually tallied. All four tests administered confirmed 100% accuracy.
The City Council is scheduled to certify the results of the election on November 24, 2009.
