LGBT this way

“What does LGBT stand for?”
“Lesbian Goleta Beach Triathlon. Apparently, some lesbians held an unsanctioned, unpermitted event a week after the GBT.”
“What?”
“Yeah.”
“I thought it stood for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender.”
“That’s just what they teach you in college.”
“Talk about not being able to agree on what to call themselves.”
“Mexicans say it stands for El Goleta Beach Triatlón.”
“Either way, I’m sick of hearing about people’s triathlons.”
"Yeah."

I'm laughing but I'm pretty sure I have no idea why.

Clare was mildly confused, too. Confused enough anyway to ask me whether the rogue lesbo tri actually happened or not. It was all pretty clear to me: The GBT was a couple weeks ago, on a stretch of bike path I grew up on. Some lesbians (or allies???) bogarted the course markings and put this L in front of one of the GBTs. I was at an LGBT inclusiveness training a while back where they were talking about how in the LGBTQ world there's a lot of debate over what acronym to use. We're doing the Cozumel Ironman 70.3 five weeks and two days from now. I've done two triathlons in my life. The Vineman Ironman 70.3, which I wrote about here on Santa Goleta, and last year's GBT, the first-ever GBT.

Oh, and much of what they teach you in college is total bollocks.
