I can't tell you how pumped I am for the KCSB fund drive. I could try, but I would fail. I'm that pumped.
There was a time when I listened to KCSB 40 hours a week. I worked at UCSB, where I had a job that required no work and where the radio station is located. When DJs offered to give away an interesting prize to the first caller, I'd call in by dialing 2424 - the on-campus extension - and win every time. Often you could hear the phone ringing in the background before the DJ was done saying (805) 893-2424.
I have a real job now, again at UCSB, and a radio show of my own. It's called Real Gauchos, where 'gaucho' refers to the second definition of gaucho in the official Spanish dictionary: 'distinguished badass'. My guest for this special fund drive episode is Dick Flacks, himself a City2 blogger and KCSB host (Culture of Protest, Thursdays 6-7pm). Aside from being my father's, my sister's and my favorite sociology professor at UCSB, he's a bona fide rabble rouser with a massive FBI file.
For a truly epic hour of oral history, listen to my interview with Flacks this Sunday at 1pm on KCSB 91.9FM or online. To really feel like you're part of the magic, call (805) 893-2424 anytime between now and next Friday - or just 2424 if you're on campus! - to pledge your support to the only local radio station worth a damn. Remember to say that you're donating because Real Gauchos is awesome.
Shortly after the 1pm broadcast, you can listen to or download the interview - and all past episodes - on Real Gauchos and iTunes.
