WHY: Western Snowy Plover is a threatened species. Nesting on the open sand makes them very vulnerable. Often their eggs and chicks are at risk of being stepped on or destroyed by unknowing beach users or off leash dogs.  This is where the docents come in, and make a difference.  Docents provide a personal and friendly contact for beach users. They promote public interest and understanding, and in turn, dramatically increase the effectiveness of other plover/tern management efforts at the Reserve.  Once a docent, only two hours a week is required. The docent program is credited with being the most important aspect of the species rehabitation ofSandsBeachand subsequent nesting.

As of 2011 the Snowy Plover Program completed ten years of activity with more than 500 nests created. During this time, the number of plovers wintering at Coal Oil Point Reserve doubled and the number of breeding pairs rose from none to an average of 20 pairs. The recovery of a breeding population at the Reserve demonstrates success in protecting a bird species that is vulnerable to urban sprawl. With research, management, education, and the undaunted efforts of many docents & volunteers, Sands Beach at Coal Oil Point Reserve is once again a habitat for wildlife in harmony with its recreational use.

WHY:             The Moving Wall, the original replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C. honoring those who served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War, will be in Santa Barbara at Chase Palm Park for five days – from noon on Thursday, Sept. 29 through noon on Monday, October 2.  Docents are sought to help visitors when they come to visit and reflect upon the memorial. First choice will go to members of the VVA, followed by all Veterans and filled out by the general public.  Docents are committing to three-hour shifts, outdoors, with specific guidelines.  PLS NOTE: All docents must attend one training session in order to be on the volunteer team. If you can’t attend, please consider making a donation in honor of the men & women of VVA local chapter 218.

Celebrating Ten Years of Nesting in 2011 ~ The Snowy Plover Docent Program (SPDP) was started in 2001 to assist with the protection of the Snowy Plovers at Coal Oil Point Reserve, (COPR) and to raise awareness in the community of the importance of the preservation of this species and its habitat. The docent program is credited with being the most important aspect of the species re-habitation of Sands Beach and subsequent nesting. The program has become a model for other docent programs around the country.
