SBIFF: Angels and Airwaves Presents 'Love' - revisited

Shortly after writing a little blurb about Angels and Airwaves Presents 'Love' I set aside a little time to watch the film. Indeed, it was visually and audibly immersive. The viewer experiences Captain Lee Miller's increasing frustration and despair in his claustrophobic isolation on the orbiting space station completely detached from the fate of earth. Throughout the film, we see snippets of conversations and interviews with unknown people. This all comes together with the big reveal, which of course I won't tell you about.
Moments later, I was at Pierre Lafond Wine Bistro downtown, at the reception for the very same film.
The roaming astronauts had removed their helmets and among them was found young aspiring filmmakers, like former SBCC film students now interning in the film industry.
Arriving a wee bit late, the food had already been pounced upon by folks, but I still grabbed a few shots. An assortment of pizza bites, including fresh tomato, roasted vegetables, caramelized onion, mushroom and olive pizzas.
On the other side of the room were the grand cheeseboards, scattered with fruit and nuts and a delicious black peppercorn crostini.
Pierre Lafond bistro was the only restaurant I encountered that offered non-SBIFF sponsored wines, ie. not the SB Collection, but unfortunately I did not have time to get the labels or taste them.
What I did have time to do was have a chat with the film's writer/director, William Eubank. What a pleasant surprise to find a young enthusiastic man at the helm of Love's creation. I was excited to learn that Eubank is a local fellow, from Santa Ynez, and most of the filming took place in Santa Ynez.
The space station was primarily filmed on sets built on the driveway of his family's home in Santa Ynez, which I never would have guessed. And after all the disruption it caused to the home, yeah, the guy was probably grounded by his folks. :)
Scenes from the civil war tunnels, which occurred early in the film, were shot on the property where Kalyra winery is located. The property owner was one of those attending today's reception at Pierre Lafond. Looking back at some stills from the Civil War scenery, I can now see the Coast Live Oaks in the background. Thankfully, I didn't spy any tour buses of people pulling up going "whoohooo, Sideways!" Kidding.
Also in attendance: actor Gunner Wright, who plays the lead character Lee Miller. He's with the film's primary voice actor, Anthony Cohen, who provided most of the film's narration.
During our chat, Eubank nodded in agreement when I referenced the Burning Man experience of intense sght and sound which resonated the most with me. He revealed they are in production for a 5.1 surround sound version. To this I say - grab your blinkies, you can be in for a wild ride.
Angels and Airwaves Presents 'Love' has been recently given an additional airing, today, 10:00 am at the Arlington. If you can tear yourself away from the Superbowl preparties and are keen to catch an art house film set on a rather big screen, here's your chance.
