Let me preface this post by saying that most of it is based on old information, hearsay, and things my Dad told me, which are always up for speculation. The one thing I know for certain is that the Uni at Hungry Cat is awesome! The spiny creatures are delivered fresh off the local boat every Tuesday.
They are served chilled with the tops cut off and the spines still moving around slightly. Little spoons are set out to scrape the yellow eggs out of the inside. It is smooth and creamy, not unlike goat cheese. Its delicious, adventurous, exotic and unexpected.
A few years back, I fact checked an article for Santa Barbara Magazine about our local uni. About 10 years ago, our uni was considered a delicacy reserved for Japanese royalty with about 90% of the local harvest being sent across the Pacific. I don't know if this is still true today but either way its always fun eating something from your own watery backyard.
