Last Saturday 100,000 people in Santa Barbara reveled in the longest day of the year, the main event being the Summer Solstice Parade. The first Parade was actually a May Day celebration. Michael Gonzales and two friends took a romp down State Street in costume on his birthday, May 1, 1974. Gonzales was known as an artist and mime, so he put on his white face and his friends went as a clown and a Ballerina. The next year about a dozen friends, mostly other artists, joined in.
