UCSB MFA 2012 Exhibition: Headgear for Tony & Bloom Projects: Susanna Vapnek, Sundowner

Posted by cafpress on: Fri 4th May, 2012

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 19, 6:30-8 pm

Exhibition on view: May 20 – July 8, 2012

Main Gallery : UCSB MFA 2012 Exhibition: Headgear for Tony presents fresh talent from the Fine Art graduate department at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). The work of MFA recipients Tim Brown, Jared Flores, Emily Halbardier, Bessie Kunath, Jae Hee Lee, Nick Loewen, Ruby Osorio, Rimas Simaitis, and Van Tran is shaped by their experiences in the UCSB Department of Art’s graduate program, which emphasizes interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to art-making and the utilization of campus resources. The artists also engage in programs outside the required MFA curriculum to both expand their interdisciplinary scope and supplement their own artistic focus, interests, and goals. Co-organized by Laurel Beckman, Professor and Graduate Program Chair, Department of Art at UCSB, and Karla Blancas, CAF Curatorial Associate, the exhibition presents the artists’ unique perspectives composed of diverse mediums and viewpoints.

Bloom Projects: Susanna Vapnek, Sundowner

Inspired by the 2008 Tea Fire, Susanna Vapnek’s paintings tap into the intensity of shared community experience with emotive, apocalyptic representations of the Santa Barbara fire season. The exhibition is titled Sundowner, a reference to dangerous and uncontrollable hot winds that descend from the mountains to the sea fueling fires into raging infernos. Her Southern California landscapes expose the fluidity, energy, and dark side of a region often viewed as an eternal paradise.

New York-based Susanna Vapnek received a BA, Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH, and a MFA, School of Visual Arts, New York, NY. A painter and collage artist, as well as documentary filmmaker, Vapnek spends time in Santa Barbara, CA.

LA-based trio WIFE, created by artists Jasmine Albuquerque, Kristen Leahy, and Nina McNeely perform their multi-media piece God Daughter. In three parts—using original choreography, projected images, and music—God Daughter tells a story of female relationships, of metamorphosis, and of the transcendence of the human form. Influenced by Chris Cunningham, Jim Henson, and Kathy Rose, the members of WIFE work together to create a singular feminine persona that is beautiful, bold, and at times very dark. WIFE's inspiration is derived from myth, folklore, archetypes, and the subtleties of everyday human behavior.

smART Talks: Laurel Beckman

Posted by cafpress on: Fri 6th Apr, 2012

Saturday, April 21, 6 PM

Video and public space artist Laurel Beckman gives a lecture at CAF on her work as an artist and professor. Beckman’s art is an investigation of perceptual phenomena, language, the built environment, and affect. By working with and nurturing eccentric public spaces such as digital billboards and gas pump TV screens, Laurel Beckman highlights perception and public display while attending to themes at the crossroads of consciousness, social conditions, meta-physics, and science. Employing a wide range of media and distribution strategies, her sanctioned and unsanctioned projects often enlist commercial and civic spaces in efforts to contribute meaningfully to the cultural landscape. Beckman is a professor of Digital Media, Experimental Video/Animation, and Public Space Arts at the University of California Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA.

The smART Talks program serves to increase awareness of local artists through a series of three talks a year by local artists about their work, careers, and creative process. The series, begun in 1996, was created in honor of Helen Rosenberg, mother of Susan Rose, and grandmother of Julie Weiner, and honors artists who live and work in the Santa Barbara area.

Thursday, April 5, 7 pm
Pre-performance Happy Hour, 5 pm

Monica Bill Barnes, Suddenly Summer Somewhere

Suddenly Summer Somewhere
is a duet that follows the relationship between two performers, Monica Bill Barnes and Anna Bass, who embody quirky, fallible, and familiar characters. This whimsical dance theater piece is set to live recordings of the Rat Pack and blends deadpan comedy, space-devouring choreography, and awkwardly strenuous partnering. Barnes’ work slips between comedy and tragedy as the performers struggle along their journey together.

Monica Bill Barnes & Co. will be performing at Center Stage Theater at 7 pm. We invite you to arrive early and join us for a pre-performance Happy Hour starting at 5 pm at CAF, featuring La Tour Wine, music by Warbler Records, and an opportunity to peruse the exhibition Flights from Wonder.

Flights from Wonder & Bloom Projects: Afruz Amighi, Suspended City

Posted by cafpress on: Mon 30th Jan, 2012

Opening Reception on Saturday, February 25, 6:30-8pm
Exhibitions on View: February 26 - April 22

Main Gallery: Flights from Wonder: Christopher Chiappa, Liz Craft, Martha Friedman, FriendsWithYou, Jon Pylypchuk, Carolyn Salas, Mindy Shapero, Shinique Smith, and Phoebe Washburn

"The process of scientific discovery is, in effect, a continual flight from wonder." -Albert Einstein

"The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives." -Albert Einstein

Religious leaders, intellectuals, and scientists such as Honoré de Balzac, Buddha, Jesus Christ, Albert Einstein, Aldous Huxley, and Marcel Proust, espoused a practice of perceiving art and science through a child’s perspective—straightforward, devoid of pretense, and unflinching in its outlook—to invigorate the imagination. Their philosophy encourages us as adults to cast aside preconceived notions and approach the world from this unfettered child’s point of view, so that we may broaden our world view, and stimulate our minds, allowing for greater degrees of discovery, curiosity, compassion, and wonder.

Inspired by this perspective, Flights from Wonder transforms CAF into a series of engaging, hands-on, interactive installations that heighten the synergy between artists and audience, and challenge all ages to re-imagine their relationship to art. The exhibition explores alternate ways to experience art by posing questions such as: How do children react and relate to the art of our time? How do we experience contemporary art? What new awareness can we acquire from children? Featuring an internationally recognized group of artists including Christopher Chiappa, Liz Craft, Martha Friedman, FriendsWithYou, Jon Pylypchuk, Carolyn Salas, Mindy Shapero, Shinique Smith, and Phoebe Washburn, Flights from Wonder empowers audiences to think, play, and create, and rejects the myth that contemporary art is mystifying or elitist, demonstrating instead that art is an enriching and stimulating part of the human experience.

Bloom Projects: Afruz Amighi, Suspended City

Suspended City explores the often ignored and unmonumental architecture of poverty and desperation. A growing landscape of refugee camps, and their make shift tents, dot the borders of the Middle East. In Amighi's work these structures manifest as large graphite drawings, hovering in space, in a realm of permanent dislocation.  Above the drawings an installation mimicking the night sky hangs.  The stars are arranged in the Kufic Arabic script spelling out the Quranic surah for solace.
Afruz Amighi was born in Tehran, Iran and lives and works in New York. Amighi received a B.A. in Political Science at Barnard College and a M.F.A. from New York University in 2007. She has completed a residency program at the School of Visual Arts in New York and was selected for the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art Emerge Program in collaboration with Creative Capital (2006). Amighi will create an on-site sculptural installation at CAF based on her series of tapestry-like work inspired by Persian rugs.

Forum Lounge: Christine Marie, Multiplying Spectacles

Posted by cafpress on: Thu 29th Dec, 2011

Thursday, February 2, 7 pm

San Francisco-based, integrated media artist and director Christine Marie breaks new ground in her performance Multiplying Spectacles. Based on the history of mirrors, her large-scale projected shadow theater performance is accompanied by a live score, incorporating video effects and 3D stereoscopic shadow work. Being intrinsically tied to ancient art forms, and metaphysical explorations of light, she creates images that invite one to remember a sense of being beyond the rational mind, where historic figures, dream sequences, and present day mix with thought processes and memory.

Forum Lounge: casebolt and smith O(h)

Posted by cafpress on: Sun 27th Nov, 2011

Thursday, December 1, 7 pm

Founded in 2006, casebolt and smith are a Los Angeles-based theater duo that skirt the proverbial line between the profound and the absurd, often siding with humor and irreverence. O(h) evolves from demonstrations of what they can, can’t, and won’t do into intricate movement phrases layered with pop culture references.  Speaking directly to the audience while dancing and sometimes singing, they offer honest insights into their limitations as a duet company and their fear of becoming unoriginal. The result is a fast-paced, complex and hilarious glimpse into the minds and pants of casebolt and smith.

In honor of community radio station KCSB’s 50th anniversary, CAF presents Wireless, an exhibition featuring an international roster of artists exploring themes of radio transmission and communications. KCSB is a leader in non-commercial FM radio and the resurgent free-form format in the U.S. KCSB 91.9 FM is run by the Associated Students of the University of California Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA. Wireless at CAF showcases artists residing in New York, Berlin, London, and Santa Barbara whose work is similarly concerned with the conveyance of ideas, memories, and objects across distances long and short. Former KCSB DJ and CAF Assistant Curator, NY-based curator Elizabeth Lovero brings together diverse mediums, such as sculptural installations, painting, video, photography, and sound, by artists Francis Baudevin, Dove Bradshaw, Nathan Carter, Tyler Coburn, Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson, Ellie Ga, Nicolas Lobo, Neighborhood Public Radio, Marko Peljhan and Matthew Beiderman, Daniel Perlin, Roman Signer, and Jim Toth. Wireless addresses pertinent issues in the radio community by showing works that champion individuality, mirror the spirit of decentralization and diversity in ownership and programming, explore community and low-power radio stations, and challenge the corporate broadcasting formulas.

In addition, Jim Toth’s new sculptural speaker installation will carry the KCSB stream 24/7 at CAF and the UCSB MultiCultural Center will screen Magic Radio, a film about the democratic power of radio in Niger, on November 16, 6 pm at the MCC Theatre. Bloom Projects: Kathleen Yorba, Sequence

Kathleen Yorba is a mixed-media artist, her interests are the study of her Latina genealogy, the idea of organic memory and the inner workings of what is fondly called the three-pound enigma (brain). Yorba delights in the novelty of discovery while furthering her ongoing exploration of memory and identity. Delicate materials and artistic brevity encourage rumination on “the illusive characteristics of memory,” and inspiration drawn from the observation of a beehive’s life cycle reflects the search for internal meaning in the world outside.

Kathleen Yorba is originally from La Junta, CO and currently lives and works in Arroyo Grande, CA. She received her M.F.A. from Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, CA and her B.A. from the University La Verne, La Verne, CA.  Yorba was selected for the Jentel Artist Residency Program in 2010. Most recently she has shown in exhibitions at the Pacific Arts League, Palo Alto, CA, Studio 5216, Los Angeles, CA, and 825 Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.
