smART Talks: Betsy Gallery, Mosaic Images and Demonstration

smART Talks: Betsy Gallery, Mosaic Images and Demonstration
Combining classical handmade Italian glass smalti and 24 karat gold tesserae with recycled porcelain, ceramics and found objects, Betsy Gallery’s contemporary mosaics give new meaning to this ancient craft. The incorporation of noble materials and historical, psychological, and literary references transform what was once considered a craft into art of the highest caliber. Betsy’s formal training began at the Art Institute in Chicago, and her mosaic studies have taken her to Mexico, Spain and Italy.

The smART Talks program serves to increase awareness of local artists through a series of three talks a year by local artists about their work, careers, and creative process. The series, begun in 1996, was created in honor of Helen Rosenberg, mother of Susan Rose, and grandmother of Julie Weiner, and pays tribute to artists who live and work in the Santa Barbara area.
ADMISSION IS FREE

smART Salons: Painting in the 21st Century

Posted by cafpress on: Fri 8th Oct, 2010

In conversation with Daniel Dove, Peter Rostovsky, Charlotta Westergren, and Paul Winstanley, moderated by Colin Gardner

In May 2010, New York Times art critic Roberta Smith re-affirmed, "Few modern myths about art have been as persistent or as annoying as the so-called death of painting." With this reputation, painters continue to grapple with their roles in the context of contemporary artistic practice.  This Fall, Santa Barbara embraces the medium of painting, featuring four prominent painters in exhibition venues around town.  Daniel Dove is the subject of a one person exhibition, Daniel Dove, at Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC), November 5 - December 10; Peter Rostovsky's and Paul Winstanley's work will be on view in Parallax, October 23 - December 19 at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (CAF); and Charlotta Westergren will be exhibiting new work in Run to Ground, in CAF's Bloom Project gallery, October 23 - December 19. Join Dove, Rostovsky, Westergren, and Winstanley, with moderator Colin Gardner to discuss painting in the 21st century.

smART Talks: Ken Bortolazzo

Bortolazzo, a Santa Barbara native, discovered an early passion for complex puzzles, which evolved through his interest in Minimalism, Op Art, and Kinetic sculpture towards a body of work called optikinetics—kinetic sculptures in stainless steel. From his studio in Santa Barbara, Bortolazzo has developed a national reputation in contemporary sculpture, which is an invitation to examine the dichotomy between object and nature, and to ultimately explore the possibilities that dwell within that vision. He is represented by Sullivan Goss, An American Gallery, Santa Barbara. FREE

F.A.T/LAB Choreographed Culinary Performance, Space is limited

Posted by cafpress on: Fri 10th Sep, 2010

Friday September 24 7 pm

F.A.T/LAB Choreographed Culinary Performance

Don't miss out on an amazing opportunity to be part of a collaborative project with current Call For Entries artist, Alejandro Casazi! Casazi’s body of work comprises a diverse range of media (including printmaking, installation, sculpture, video, sound, photography, and works on paper) and may be described as an effort to understand the elemental experiences of human beings (breathing, heartbeat, taste, etc.). Often, the artist’s final product is achieved through collaboration with experts in fields outside the visual arts. F.A.T/LAB (Food, Art, and Technology) is a collective, made up of Alejandro Casazi (Visual Artist), Joel Chapman (Principal Chef), and Christopher Jette (Music Composer), that creates performative culinary experiences. Their work harmonizes sensory experiences (The Visual, The Sound, The Taste) in a carefully choreographed project that highlights the basic human activity of eating.  Guests will engage in this “maximalist” dinner event, where an overstimulation of the senses will collide with every dish, taste, sound, and visual element. The installation, on view August 07 – October 03, 2010 as part of  Call For Entries 2010, is a staging area for the dinner but also contains photographs, sound, and video projections to be included during the performance. Tickets to attend are $300/person and can be purchased through check or by phone 805-966-5373 x 105. Ticket price directly funds the artists' efforts. Please include your name, address, phone, email, and allergies to specific ingredients or intolerances in the mail or message with payment. Seating is very limited, so reserve your spot(s) and don't miss out!  Visit: http://www.fatlabcollective.com/ to learn more about the collective and this one-of-a-kind project.

About

Small CAF is a non-profit, non-collecting institution dedicated to exhibiting the highest quality of contemporary art while recognizing "the artists of tomorrow," and was founded in 1976 by artists and art supporters seeking a venue dedicated solely to contemporary art. What once began as a grassroots, artist-run organization with nominal funding now serves as the leading contemporary arts presenter in Central California. CAF offers its innovative education and exhibition programming to the region primarily free of charge. There is no admission fee because CAF believes that the arts should be accessible to all audiences of all persuasions. It truly is foundations and individuals from the community that keep CAF active, inspired and alive with opportunities for artists, children, and adults to experience all the visual and performing arts have to offer.
