Applicants were selected in Fall 2012 by a panel of distinguished jurors made up of art professionals currently working in the visual arts field including: Jill Dawsey, Associate Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; Cesar Garcia, Founder and Director of The Mistake Room, Los Angeles, CA, and the current U.S. Commissioner for the 13th International Cairo Biennale, Egypt; and Ruba Karib, Curator, Sculpture Center, New York, NY

Bloom Projects: Ro Snell, All that is left

Santa Barbara-based artist Ro Snell has been invited to create a new body of work for MCA Santa Barbara’s Fall 2013 iteration of Bloom Projects. All that is left will examine what remains, both physical and abstract, after a process or a period of time. The project considers what is left, not only in the material sense but also in the mind.  Using assembled objects, re-contextualized organic forms, and combined printed images, the body of work will be an installation concerning perception, disintegration, emotion, and recollection.

Born in Malvern, England, UK, Snell currently lives and works in Santa Barbara, CA.  She received her MFA from George Washington University, Washington, DC, and BFA from Brighton University of Art, England, UK.  She has exhibited at The Arts Fund Gallery, Santa Barbara, CA; Atkinson Gallery, Santa Barbara, CA; and Tinsmiths, Ledbury, England, UK.

THINGS THAT TURN YOUR BRAINS TO MUSH

Posted by cafpress on: Thu 7th Mar, 2013

Saturday, April 13, 6-8 pm
Opening Reception
Join us for the opening of THINGS THAT TURN YOUR BRAINS TO MUSH and Bloom Projects: Glen Fogel, Recent Video

Exhibitions on view: April 14 - June 16

THINGS THAT TURN YOUR BRAINS TO MUSH featuringDavid Cooley,Petra Cortright, Yoon Chung Han, Katy McCarthy, Chris Silva, Tellef Tellefson, and Jonny Troyna

“...people have always had a tremendous fear about the impact of new technology on language. When the printing press was first invented, people thought it was an instrument of the devil that would spawn unauthorised versions of the Bible.“ - David Crystal, author of Language and the Internet

Culture and language evolve faster than individuals can adapt. Parents worry when their children participate in “new” media. This reluctance is of course not new. From their inception, cartoons and television were purported to “turn kids' brains to mush”.  This conventional wisdom spawned years of cultural criticism revolving around the supposed “negative effects” of television, cartoons, and later, the Internet. In his book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man Marshall McLuan famously said, “Each innovation is not only commercially disrupting, but socially and psychologically corroding, as well.”  Today, there is still fear of the corruption of “traditional” English by the widespread adoption of communication tools like Twitter and texting, which make regular use of abbreviations and shorthand. One only has to think of LOL (laughing out loud) or YOLO (you only live once) which are pervasive terminology shortcuts to traditional communication.

The artists in this exhibition create work that addresses society’s reluctance to embrace new media and language. They will explore this phenomenon through the lens of a complex and rapidly growing medium: the animated GIF (graphics interchange format).

An animated GIF is a multi-frame (moving) image that can be viewed in any web-browser. Used to add motion to simple icons in early web-design, the GIF has metastasized into something more culturally complex.  Today, a GIF may be a savvy response in a comment thread, a stand-alone visual joke, or a simple act of teenage vanity. GIFs have become mesmerizing cultural artifacts, and like all such new media they are controversial to the status quo.

Artists such as Jonny Troyna investigate repetition, expectations, and correlation via projected loops, while Petra Cortright’s work suggests a passive and possibly ambivalent attitude towards consumption of media, narcissism, and community. By showcasing work that uses the GIF as a point of reference—whether it be projected, painted, sculpted, or pixelated—the 7 artists in this exhibition challenge audience to think critically about the “fear of the new” in a broader cultural and historical context.

Flights from Wonder & Bloom Projects: Afruz Amighi, Suspended City

Posted by cafpress on: Mon 30th Jan, 2012

Opening Reception on Saturday, February 25, 6:30-8pm
Exhibitions on View: February 26 - April 22

Main Gallery: Flights from Wonder: Christopher Chiappa, Liz Craft, Martha Friedman, FriendsWithYou, Jon Pylypchuk, Carolyn Salas, Mindy Shapero, Shinique Smith, and Phoebe Washburn

"The process of scientific discovery is, in effect, a continual flight from wonder." -Albert Einstein

"The pursuit of truth and beauty is a sphere of activity in which we are permitted to remain children all our lives." -Albert Einstein

Religious leaders, intellectuals, and scientists such as Honoré de Balzac, Buddha, Jesus Christ, Albert Einstein, Aldous Huxley, and Marcel Proust, espoused a practice of perceiving art and science through a child’s perspective—straightforward, devoid of pretense, and unflinching in its outlook—to invigorate the imagination. Their philosophy encourages us as adults to cast aside preconceived notions and approach the world from this unfettered child’s point of view, so that we may broaden our world view, and stimulate our minds, allowing for greater degrees of discovery, curiosity, compassion, and wonder.

Inspired by this perspective, Flights from Wonder transforms CAF into a series of engaging, hands-on, interactive installations that heighten the synergy between artists and audience, and challenge all ages to re-imagine their relationship to art. The exhibition explores alternate ways to experience art by posing questions such as: How do children react and relate to the art of our time? How do we experience contemporary art? What new awareness can we acquire from children? Featuring an internationally recognized group of artists including Christopher Chiappa, Liz Craft, Martha Friedman, FriendsWithYou, Jon Pylypchuk, Carolyn Salas, Mindy Shapero, Shinique Smith, and Phoebe Washburn, Flights from Wonder empowers audiences to think, play, and create, and rejects the myth that contemporary art is mystifying or elitist, demonstrating instead that art is an enriching and stimulating part of the human experience.

Bloom Projects: Afruz Amighi, Suspended City

Suspended City explores the often ignored and unmonumental architecture of poverty and desperation. A growing landscape of refugee camps, and their make shift tents, dot the borders of the Middle East. In Amighi's work these structures manifest as large graphite drawings, hovering in space, in a realm of permanent dislocation.  Above the drawings an installation mimicking the night sky hangs.  The stars are arranged in the Kufic Arabic script spelling out the Quranic surah for solace.
Afruz Amighi was born in Tehran, Iran and lives and works in New York. Amighi received a B.A. in Political Science at Barnard College and a M.F.A. from New York University in 2007. She has completed a residency program at the School of Visual Arts in New York and was selected for the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art Emerge Program in collaboration with Creative Capital (2006). Amighi will create an on-site sculptural installation at CAF based on her series of tapestry-like work inspired by Persian rugs.

Wireless: Francis Baudevin, Matthew Beiderman and Marko Peljhan, Dove Bradshaw, Nathan Carter, Tyler Coburn,  Aaron S. Davidson and Melissa Dubbin, Ellie Ga, Nicolas Lobo, Neighborhood Public Radio, Daniel Perlin, Roman Signer, and Jim Toth. Curated by Elizabeth Lovero

In honor of community radio station KCSB’s 50th anniversary, CAF presents Wireless, an exhibition featuring an international roster of artists exploring themes of radio transmission and communications. KCSB is a leader in non-commercial FM radio and the resurgent free-form format in the U.S. KCSB 91.9 FM is run by the Associated Students of the University of California Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA. Wireless at CAF showcases artists residing in New York, Berlin, London, and Santa Barbara whose work is similarly concerned with the conveyance of ideas, memories, and objects across distances long and short. Former KCSB DJ and CAF Assistant Curator, NY-based curator Elizabeth Lovero brings together diverse mediums, such as sculptural installations, painting, video, photography, and sound, by artists Francis Baudevin, Dove Bradshaw, Nathan Carter, Tyler Coburn, Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson, Ellie Ga, Nicolas Lobo, Neighborhood Public Radio, Marko Peljhan and Matthew Beiderman, Daniel Perlin, Roman Signer, and Jim Toth. Wireless addresses pertinent issues in the radio community by showing works that champion individuality, mirror the spirit of decentralization and diversity in ownership and programming, explore community and low-power radio stations, and challenge the corporate broadcasting formulas.

In addition, Jim Toth’s new sculptural speaker installation will carry the KCSB stream 24/7 at CAF and the UCSB MultiCultural Center will screen Magic Radio, a film about the democratic power of radio in Niger, on November 16, 6 pm at the MCC Theatre. Admission to exhibition and the above listed associated events is free.

Bloom Projects: Kathleen Yorba, Sequence

Kathleen Yorba is a mixed-media artist, her interests are the study of her Latina genealogy, the idea of organic memory and the inner workings of what is fondly called the three-pound enigma (brain). Yorba delights in the novelty of discovery while furthering her ongoing exploration of memory and identity. Delicate materials and artistic brevity encourage rumination on “the illusive characteristics of memory,” and inspiration drawn from the observation of a beehive’s life cycle reflects the search for internal meaning in the world outside.

Kathleen Yorba is originally from La Junta, CO and currently lives and works in Arroyo Grande, CA. She received her M.F.A. from Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, CA and her B.A. from the University La Verne, La Verne, CA.  Yorba was selected for the Jentel Artist Residency Program in 2010. Most recently she has shown in exhibitions at the Pacific Arts League, Palo Alto, CA, Studio 5216, Los Angeles, CA, and 825 Gallery, Los Angeles, CA.

Call For Entries 2011 and Bloom Projects: Dawit L. Petros, Mahber Shaw’ate (Association of 7)

Posted by cafpress on: Mon 25th Jul, 2011

Saturday, August 6, 6:30-8 pm

Opening Reception and Performances

ON VIEW FROM August 7 – October 9, 2011

Main Gallery: Call For Entries 2011:  Desiree D’Alessandro, Elizabeth Kunath, Luke Matjas, Michael Powell, Leighton Collier Roux

CAF showcases five stand-outs from the tri-counties in our annual Call For Entries (CFE) group exhibition, an opportunity that invited the artists to present newly commissioned work in the galleries. Guest curated by Kim Beil, the exhibition ranges in media, gender, and point of view, reflecting the sophistication and diversity of our region. Artist Leighton Collier Roux will present a performance artwork during the Opening Reception.

Applicants were selected in Fall 2010 by a panel of distinguished jurors made up of artists and art professionals currently working in the visual arts field including: Kim Beil, Independent Art Writer, Santa Barbara, CA; Stephanie Dotson, Artist and Assistant Printmaking Professor at Santa Barbara City College, Santa Barbara, CA; Rachel Gugelberger, Independent Curator, New York, NY; and Annie Wharton, Gallery Director at Annie Wharton Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.

Bloom Projects: Dawit L. Petros, Mahber Shaw’ate (Association of 7)

Mahber Shaw’ate (Association of 7) are photographs of temporary sculptural installations that investigate permutational possibilities and the disjuncture between physical and abstract materiality. The works appropriate the framework of an east African alphabet script (Tigrinya, Petros’ first language) and found cardboard boxes. Petros integrates performative strategies, sculpture, and installation with legacies of landscape imagery to create a series of photographic tableaus. Each photograph depicts a specific arrangement constructed in various locations around Santa Barbara. The temporary structures merge possibilities inherent to specific cultural references: an African alphabet (a parallel model for seriality) and western minimalist traditions. Petros’ photographs present a hybridized third form, which extracts liberally from both.

Dawit L. Petros was born in Asmara, Eritrea and raised in Kenya and Canada. He currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. Petros received his M.F.A at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA in 2007 and his B.F.A in Photography at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada in 2003. Petros has shown at The Studio Museum, New York, NY, Sikkema Jenkins & Co, New York, NY, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit, Detroit, MI. He is represented by Alexander Gray Associates, New York, NY.

This exhibition will present a series of video portraits of artists, musicians, and friends, inspired by Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests (1964-66).  The exhibition will include patterned backdrops or wallpapers for each “character.”  The artist will also present a series of still photographs, so that the complete installation ultimately acts as a community portrait.

Home Show, Revisited

The reference to the community in Michele O’Marah’s solo exhibition in CAF's main gallery, Michele O'Marah:Video Portraits, provides a bridge to a public exhibition component co-curated by the artist and Miki Garcia, Executive Director. Reprising two of CAF’s most significant exhibitions, Home Show (1988) and Home Show2 (1996), the two invited 10 Los Angeles-based artists to reconsider the societal and cultural notion of “home,” by creating site-specific installations in residences throughout Santa Barbara. Artists include: Piero Golia, Evan Holloway, Bettina Hubby, Florian Morlat, Kori Newkirk, Jennifer Rochlin, Ry Rocklen, Kirsten Stoltmann, Stephanie Taylor, and Jennifer West. The homes will be open to the public on Friday, and weekends throughout the run of the exhibition.  Visitors to CAF will be given a map and instructions for the tour.

Eating Apples in Paradise;Bloom Projects: Sarah Cain, Santa Barbara

Posted by cafpress on: Fri 25th Feb, 2011

Eating Apples in Paradise and Sarah Cain, Santa Barbara

Opening: Saturday, March 5, 7-9 pm

Exhibitions on view: March 6 – May 1, 2011

Eating Apples in Paradise: Macduff Everton, Elizabeth Folk, Nancy Gifford, Penelope Gottlieb, Saul Gray-Hildenbrand, Kimberly Hahn, Cyndee Howard, Hank Pitcher, Warren Schultheis, Steven Soria, Jonny Troyna, and James Van Arsdale

As early as the 1900’s, the city of Santa Barbara promoted itself and its environs as an idyllic setting. From Pearl Chase’s visions of utopia to the widespread dissemination of the resort destination via the eponymous soap opera and into today’s promotions by the Chamber of Commerce and Conference & Visitors’ Bureau, Santa Barbara has consciously sold and established itself as a modern-day paradise.

CAF dares 12 local artists to take a bite out of the proverbial apple with an exhibition exploring the realities and ambiguities of living in such an Edenic location. Via the artists’ works, this exhibition will reveal the multi-faceted issues of the region, both embracing and critiquing our history, sociology, and current conditions.

Eating Apples in Paradise is brought to you in collaboration with Lotusland’s exhibition, entitled Penelope Gottlieb, Gone, on view from February 26 - April 23, 2011. Docent-guided tours offered Wednesday through Saturday for an admission fee of $35 (adults), $10 (ages 5 to 18), and FREE to children under 5. Reservations are required to view the exhibition and may be made by email at reservation@lotusland.org or by phone at 805-969-9990.

Special thanks to: Susan E. Bower Exhibition Fund, Santa Barbara, CA; Casa Magazine, Santa Barbara, CA; Santa Barbara Independent; Santa Barbara News-Press; and Wayne McCall & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA.

Bloom Projects: Sarah Cain, Santa Barbara

Los Angeles-based artist Sarah Cain takes painting outside of its traditional canon by using man-made and natural materials to create a tension between abstract, geometric logic, and a rush of fluid, free-form lines. Her canvases become sculptural as they extend beyond their frames to literally push the limits of what a painting can be.

Sarah Cain was born in Albany, NY in 1979. She received her B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA in 2001 and her M.F.A. from University of California Berkeley, Berkeley, CA in 2005. Cain is represented by the Anthony Meier Fine Arts, San Francisco, CA. Her work has been exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, CA; KN Gallery, Chicago, IL; and the Seiler + Mosseri-Marlio Gallery, Zurich, Switzerland.

Peter Rostovsky and Paul Winstanley: Parallax

Posted by cafpress on: Fri 8th Oct, 2010

The Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum presents a groundbreaking exhibition featuring painters Peter Rostovsky and Paul Winstanley. This exhibition resists the structure of an ordinary solo show, instead offering a visual conversation between an established and a mid-career artist, or in other words: a parallax. Winstanley has garnered widespread praise for his paintings, exploring how a photograph conciliates our experience of vision and how the painted world can transcend photography’s supposed neutrality, while Rostovsky photographs the world around him and collects images from the Internet as material for his exactingly rendered, atmospheric paintings. The idea of parallax is a perfect description for how these artists, unified by the same common project, come upon similar obstacles, but also parallel solutions. With this new exhibition model, CAF peels back the veneer of institutional authority and allows the audience an intimate view behind the artist’s mind, studio practice, and process in creating their work.

Bloom Projects: Keith Puccinelli, the foul stain of we

Santa Barbara-based Keith Puccinelli uses an irreverent quick wit, modest materials, and tableaux to broach the conflict between the preciousness of life and man’s disregard for life during times of war, to create a kind of carnival of sorrow. The strong juxtaposition of materials and a passion for wordplay often brings a sense of humor to glaze or emphasize the serious or tragic presented in the work.

Main Gallery: Visionaries: Contemporary Art from Santa Barbara’s Private Collections

This exhibition will celebrate Santa Barbara’s world-class private contemporary art collections, specifically highlighting ones which include cutting-edge work including paintings, prints, drawings, photography, and sculpture by leading figures in the contemporary art world. Widely recognized as a center of arts and culture, leisure, and natural beauty, Santa Barbara also boasts a population of savvy art aficionados who travel, collect, and support contemporary art. This exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the private treasures in our midst.

CAF would like to acknowledge the support of Candyce Eoff, Montecito, CA; Carole Lieff, Montecito, CA; Bill Spencer, Santa Barbara, CA; Wayne McCall & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA; and all the Lenders of this exhibition.

Bloom Projects: Adrian Esparza, Paño-rama

El Paso-based artist Adrian Esparza garners much of his source material and artistic inspiration from his borderland experience. Riffing on the Spanish word for cloth (paño), the artist will create a site-specific installation consisting of multiple, painted handkerchiefs quilted together to form large fabric panels. The collaged images on the handkerchiefs are gathered from a range of sources including the internet, personal imagery, and text. This newly commissioned work is directly inspired by CAF's geographic location, considering the California prison system, Santa Barbara (Patron Saint of prisoners), outsider art (drawings on handkerchiefs made by prisoners are referred to as “paños”), the concept of panopticon (circular prisons with cells distributed around a central surveillance station), and French philosopher, Michel Foucault's writings. Paño-rama considers notions of power and freedom of expression in contemporary West Coast society.

Special thanks to Brush & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA; Glenn Miller and Marjorie Gies, Santa Barbara, CA; Bill Spencer, Santa Barbara, CA; and Wayne McCall & Associates, Santa Barbara, CA.

About

Small CAF is a non-profit, non-collecting institution dedicated to exhibiting the highest quality of contemporary art while recognizing "the artists of tomorrow," and was founded in 1976 by artists and art supporters seeking a venue dedicated solely to contemporary art. What once began as a grassroots, artist-run organization with nominal funding now serves as the leading contemporary arts presenter in Central California. CAF offers its innovative education and exhibition programming to the region primarily free of charge. There is no admission fee because CAF believes that the arts should be accessible to all audiences of all persuasions. It truly is foundations and individuals from the community that keep CAF active, inspired and alive with opportunities for artists, children, and adults to experience all the visual and performing arts have to offer.
