Forum Lounge: WIFE, God Daughter

Posted by cafpress on: Fri 13th Apr, 2012

Thursday, May 3
5 pm Happy Hour: Wine provided by La Tour Wine Merchant and music by
Warbler Records & Goods

7 pm Performance

LA-based trio WIFE, created by artists Jasmine Albuquerque, Kristen Leahy, and Nina McNeely perform their multi-media piece God Daughter. In three parts—using original choreography, projected images, and music—God Daughter tells a story of female relationships, of metamorphosis, and of the transcendence of the human form. Influenced by Chris Cunningham, Jim Henson, and Kathy Rose, the members of WIFE work together to create a singular feminine persona that is beautiful, bold, and at times very dark. WIFE's inspiration is derived from myth, folklore, archetypes, and the subtleties of everyday human behavior.

Special thanks to: Endever Music Productions, Santa Barbara, CA; the Franciscan Inn, Santa Barbara, CA; KCSB, Santa Barbara, CA; La Tour Wine Merchant, Santa Barbara, CA; National Endowment for the Arts, Washington, DC; Santa Barbara Independent; and Warbler Records & Goods, Santa Barbara, CA.

Forum Lounge is presented in association with the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization’s 1st Thursday.

smART Talks: Laurel Beckman

Posted by cafpress on: Fri 6th Apr, 2012

Saturday, April 21, 6 PM

Video and public space artist Laurel Beckman gives a lecture at CAF on her work as an artist and professor. Beckman’s art is an investigation of perceptual phenomena, language, the built environment, and affect. By working with and nurturing eccentric public spaces such as digital billboards and gas pump TV screens, Laurel Beckman highlights perception and public display while attending to themes at the crossroads of consciousness, social conditions, meta-physics, and science. Employing a wide range of media and distribution strategies, her sanctioned and unsanctioned projects often enlist commercial and civic spaces in efforts to contribute meaningfully to the cultural landscape. Beckman is a professor of Digital Media, Experimental Video/Animation, and Public Space Arts at the University of California Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA.

The smART Talks program serves to increase awareness of local artists through a series of three talks a year by local artists about their work, careers, and creative process. The series, begun in 1996, was created in honor of Helen Rosenberg, mother of Susan Rose, and grandmother of Julie Weiner, and honors artists who live and work in the Santa Barbara area.

About

Small CAF is a non-profit, non-collecting institution dedicated to exhibiting the highest quality of contemporary art while recognizing "the artists of tomorrow," and was founded in 1976 by artists and art supporters seeking a venue dedicated solely to contemporary art. What once began as a grassroots, artist-run organization with nominal funding now serves as the leading contemporary arts presenter in Central California. CAF offers its innovative education and exhibition programming to the region primarily free of charge. There is no admission fee because CAF believes that the arts should be accessible to all audiences of all persuasions. It truly is foundations and individuals from the community that keep CAF active, inspired and alive with opportunities for artists, children, and adults to experience all the visual and performing arts have to offer.
