Elaine LeVasseur: Collaborative Printmaking and Home Show, Revisited

Posted by cafpress on: Wed 22nd Jun, 2011

Elaine LeVasseur is a professional printmaker and a founding member of the Santa Barbara Printmakers.  She exhibited her own work from 1978 to 1998, and is now active as an independent curator, art collector, printmaking instructor and collaborative printer.  Her latest community project, The Home Show, Revisited Portfolio, was done in commemoration of her 60th birthday in 2011.  Le Vasseur and members of the Santa Barbara Printmakers did all 10 images using Solarplates (photo polymer plates) and printed either on an etching press or letter press.  The Home Show, Revisited Portfolio was organized to offer the Home Show, Revisited Los Angeles guest artists a unique opportunity to make a limited edition fine art print to accompany their in-home installation.

Forum Lounge: Extreme Animals: An Evening with Jacob and David

Posted by cafpress on: Mon 13th Jun, 2011

Thursday, July 7, 7 pm

Artists Jacob Ciocci and David Wightman present a mash-up of live music, video, and staged theatrics, in a choreographed array of live shredding, extreme feedback, youtube bombardment, ecstatic dance moves, and Sunday morning cartoons. The short performance works range from absurd inspirational lectures, to musings on contemporary internet culture, to introspective meditations on metal guitar shredding technique, all couched within a lo-fi, intentionally awkward 'performance art' aesthetic. Their newest performance delves into the world of tween culture and the current obsession with the infinite hall of mirrors known as "forever young".

Jacob Ciocci is an artist and current Eyebeam Fellow notably regarded as one third of the American art collective Paper Rad.  He is also a prolific producer of music, installations, websites, and animations. David Wightman is completing his Ph.D. in music composition at UCSD, where he teaches courses on popular and contemporary music. Some of his many music projects include: Fortress of Amplitude, Powdered Wigs, and Chariots of Fire. Together Jacob and David form like Voltron in the high-NRG electronic music band Extreme Animals and have toured the country every summer for the past 8 years presenting their music, videos, and art.

Support for Forum Lounge is generously provided by: Andrea Lang Fund, Daniel Clark, Endevermusic Productions, the Franciscan Inn, KCSB, the Santa Barbara Independent, Santa Barbara Winery, and Therese Schweidler.  Forum Lounge is presented in association with the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization’s 1st Thursday.

Posted by cafpress on: Wed 8th Jun, 2011

Community Event and Fundraiser: Friday, July 22, 6 pm - Saturday, July 23, 6 pm

CAF is pulling an all-nighter for this 2nd annual, unique 24-hour drawing extravaganza! Artists will draw side by side with dabblers, providing a unique laboratory for sharing, creating, and participating in a community art experience.
Register to draw next to local contemporary art luminaries such as Ann Diener, Dane Goodman, Saul Gray-Hildenbrand, Kimberly Hahn, and Keith Pucinelli as well as children, community leaders, and others!  All drawings will be sold to the public at one of four prices ($25, $75, $150, and $300 plus tax) and proceeds will be divided among the participants and CAF. Drawing is broadly interpreted and artists of all disciplines, skill levels, and ages are encouraged to join us.

There will be a free, closing reception to celebrate the artists’ efforts and show off the remaining artwork on Sunday, July 24, 4-6 pm. Prospective drawers may sign up for any period of time throughout the 24 hours and must contact Nicole Biergiel at nbiergiel@sbcaf.org to register by July 1.  For more information visit sbcaf.org or call: (805) 966-5373 x102.

smART Salons: There's No Place Like Home

Posted by cafpress on: Wed 8th Jun, 2011

The Independent's own Isabelle Walker moderates a panel discussion exploring the meaning of "home" in Santa Barbara.  A variety of perspectives will be shared based on the current exhibition Home Show, Revisited.  Join us to examine the complexities of this seemingly simple concept.  Our panel representatives will be Casa Esperanza Executive Director Mike Foley, U.C.S.B. Economics Professor Charles Stuart and Faculty member at the Southern California Institute of Architecture Peter Zellner.  Following the panel discussion, a short presentation of images of alternative housing development will be presented by Peter Zellner. Sponsored by the Santa Barbara Independent.

smART Talks: Betsy Gallery, Mosaic Images and Demonstration
Combining classical handmade Italian glass smalti and 24 karat gold tesserae with recycled porcelain, ceramics and found objects, Betsy Gallery’s contemporary mosaics give new meaning to this ancient craft. The incorporation of noble materials and historical, psychological, and literary references transform what was once considered a craft into art of the highest caliber. Betsy’s formal training began at the Art Institute in Chicago, and her mosaic studies have taken her to Mexico, Spain and Italy.

The smART Talks program serves to increase awareness of local artists through a series of three talks a year by local artists about their work, careers, and creative process. The series, begun in 1996, was created in honor of Helen Rosenberg, mother of Susan Rose, and grandmother of Julie Weiner, and pays tribute to artists who live and work in the Santa Barbara area.

About

Small CAF is a non-profit, non-collecting institution dedicated to exhibiting the highest quality of contemporary art while recognizing "the artists of tomorrow," and was founded in 1976 by artists and art supporters seeking a venue dedicated solely to contemporary art. What once began as a grassroots, artist-run organization with nominal funding now serves as the leading contemporary arts presenter in Central California. CAF offers its innovative education and exhibition programming to the region primarily free of charge. There is no admission fee because CAF believes that the arts should be accessible to all audiences of all persuasions. It truly is foundations and individuals from the community that keep CAF active, inspired and alive with opportunities for artists, children, and adults to experience all the visual and performing arts have to offer.
