Forum Lounge: Lucky Dragon

Lucky Dragons, Photo: David Horvitz

"Lucky Dragons" is a collaborative project facilitated by Los Angeles-based artists Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara. Lucky Dragons relies heavily on participation, openly engaging audiences and passersby in the creation of the artwork. An important aspect of "Lucky Dragons'" performance pieces is the publishing and distribution of multiples, in the form of books, recordings, and posters, low-cost and widely accessible to the public. With participation ranging from the intense intimacy of two people, to the public spectacle of several thousand people, to the internet's infinite capacity for exchange, at the heart of it all is playing together--building up social collectivities in both public and private spaces, and re-engaging, with wonder, the technologies that connect us.

Support for Forum Lounge is generously provided by: Endevermusic Productions, the Franciscan Inn, KCSB, Santa Barbara Winery, and the Santa Barbara Independent. Forum Lounge is presented in association with the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization’s 1st Thursday.

Curator's Notes:

Forum Lounge is proud to present a performance by LA musical duo Lucky Dragons. While "musical" certainly best categorizes the ensemble's performance, it is not your traditional concert. By integrating live feedback from viewer interaction, Lucky Dragon's style can more appropriately be described as improvised collaboration with a multimedia twist. The result is a curious blend of electronic static complemented by musical overtones. It's at once robotic and melodic (which begs the question, do robots like music?). It's also an exercise in a democratic process of creation, where the viewer has as much control over the output as the musician. Lucky Dragons consists of Luke Fishbeck and Sarah Rara; however, for this peformance, Luke will be working with Santa Barbara-based programmer Pablo Colapinto. In addition to releasing an impressive number of albums (19) since their formation in 1999, the group has also performed at the Smell, Echo Curio, Dublab, MOCA and at the 2008 Whitney Biennial.

About

Small Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB), formerly the Contemporary Arts Forum (CAF), is a non-profit, non-collecting institution dedicated to exhibiting the highest quality of contemporary art while recognizing "the artists of tomorrow," and was founded in 1976 by artists and art supporters seeking a venue dedicated solely to contemporary art. What once began as a grassroots, artist-run organization with nominal funding now serves as the leading contemporary arts presenter in Central California. MCASB offers its innovative education and exhibition programming to the region primarily free of charge. There is no admission fee because MCASB believes that the arts should be accessible to all audiences of all persuasions. MCASB advances creativity and inspires critical thinking through meaningful engagement with the art of our time.
