Forum Lounge: Sanford Biggers

Posted by cafpress on: Sun 28th Mar, 2010

Forum Lounge: Sanford Biggers with special guests Gamelan Sinar Surya and DJ Jahi Sundance

Performance: THUR. APR 1, 7 PM

Location: Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Paseo Nuevo Mall Upper Arts Terrace
FREE

Curator's Notes:

For April's Forum Lounge, I am extremely excited to be working with Sanford Biggers, whose exhibition, Moon Medicine, is currently on view in CAF's gallery. Although he largely known as a visual artist, Sanford uses sound and music as a central element in his work, which can also be seen in his video works. To illustrate this, the Forum Lounge will also include a special screening of Sanford's earlier video piece from 2000, Mandala of the B-Bodhisattva II, downstairs in the Paseo rotunda from 5 - 7 pm. Mandala of the B-Bodhisattva II is an excellent example of how music inspires and informs Sanford's practice and features aerial footage of urban break dancers in Brooklyn, NY.

For this Forum Lounge, Biggers has created an original one-night only performance comprised of an unique mash-up with Los Angeles-based DJ Jahi Sundance, live video mixing, and local ensemble Gamelan Sinar Surya. Drawing from ancient African and Buddhist musical traditions, stream of consciousness, hip hop culture, and projected images, he will offer a collective audience interaction relating back to the Buddhist concept of interconnectedness (in that many people have touched the work and with every new touch, each person becomes connected to one another in a real, but subtle way). Co-presented by Gamelan Sinar Surya and The Brotherhood of Santa Barbara.

About

Small CAF is a non-profit, non-collecting institution dedicated to exhibiting the highest quality of contemporary art while recognizing "the artists of tomorrow," and was founded in 1976 by artists and art supporters seeking a venue dedicated solely to contemporary art. What once began as a grassroots, artist-run organization with nominal funding now serves as the leading contemporary arts presenter in Central California. CAF offers its innovative education and exhibition programming to the region primarily free of charge. There is no admission fee because CAF believes that the arts should be accessible to all audiences of all persuasions. It truly is foundations and individuals from the community that keep CAF active, inspired and alive with opportunities for artists, children, and adults to experience all the visual and performing arts have to offer.
