An Evening with Monsters of Folk

  |   by admin    Bookmark and Share

Monsters of Folk—comprised of Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James and singer/songwriter M.Ward bring their Fall tour to the Santa Barbara Bowl on Thursday, October 22nd and will be releasing their first collaborative album on September 22nd.  Although these critically acclaimed artists have shared the stage before, this album marks their first recorded output as a band.

Monsters of Folk began as folklore of sorts, when James, Oberst, Ward and Mogis did their first run of shows together in 2004.  Like the musical revue shows that went town to town when rock ‘n’ roll was newly born, the tour was called “An Evening With:  Bright Eyes, Jim James and M. Ward,” although amongst friends and crew, it became affectionately known as the “Monsters of Folk Tour.”  While entertaining audiences coast to coast with gorgeous acoustic melodies and world-weary tales, the foursome vowed to make their way to a studio at some point after the tour’s completion.  Instead, the songsmiths went on to individually release some of rock music’s most exciting and essential albums of the last five years – Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning & Cassadaga; My Morning Jacket’s Z & Evil Urges; M. Ward’s Post War and Hold Time.   Never ones to forget their promise, when downtime presented itself, they convened in the studio multiple times over two years, with Mogis at the helm of their first recorded effort.  The result is as stunning and storied as you would expect it to be.

All four members play every instrument on the album, supplying everything from drum kills to cascading backing vocals.  The songs—some road-worn fables, some intimate and intricate with electronic elements, some woozy and sun-soaked—are everything one expects from these four musical minds collaborating together.  The album exudes a warm, organic spaciousness, filled by brilliant choruses, intoxicating harmonies and effortless melodies, as each member brings his own strengths to the table to create one perfect whole.

UPDATE: Shows cancelled. See Below original post.

NYC’s favorite sons; the Beastie Boys return to the Santa Barbara Bowl after their 2007 sold-out performance, for a pair of not-to-be-missed shows on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20 with very special guests.

Who would have thought that a punk band thrown together for a birthday party would evolve into one of the most influential and groundbreaking successes of its time?  Certainly not the Beastie Boys, whose now 30+ year career has logged 40 million in sales, three Grammy Awards and four #1 albums— including the first hip-hop album ever to top the Billboard 200.

The group is slated to release their eighth studio album, Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 on September 15 in multiple configurations including a 5.1 surround mix.  The album consists of 17 tracks and features guest appearances by Nas and Santigold.

Finally, the last installment of the deluxe, remastered, expanded and altogether awesome Beastie Boys catalogue reissues will be dropping in advance of the new record:  The band’s multi-platinum 1998 opus Hello Nasty will be given the 2-CD/vinyl box set/multi format treatment beginning with an August 17 pre- order/digital release and will hit stores August 25.  Preceded by the universal smash “Intergalactic,” Hello Nasty crashed into the #1 spots of charts worldwide upon its 1998 release, with first week sales of

nearly 700,000 in the US alone.  Hello Nasty went on to yield Beastie Boys classics “Body Movin’,” “Three MC’s and One DJ,” “Remote Control” and “Super Disco Breakin’.”

Don’t miss your chance to see the Beastie Boys with very special guests at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Saturday, September 19 & Sunday, September 20 at 6pm.  Ticket prices range from $37 to $53, plus applicable service charges.  The Santa Barbara Bowl is located at 1122 N. Milpas, Santa Barbara, CA 93103, 800-745-3000.

Tickets On Sale Saturday, July 25 @ 11am

----Important Update----

BEASTIE BOYS TOUR DATES CANCELLED, ALBUM RELEASE POSTPONED

ADAM YAUCH DIAGNOSED WITH PAROTID GLAND TUMOR

Adam "MCA" Yauch of Beastie Boys was diagnosed last week as having a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. Luckily it was caught early and is localized in one area, and as such is considered very treatable. It will however require surgery and several weeks of additional treatment. Fortunately the cancer is not in a location that will affect Yauch's vocal chords.

Beastie Boys have cancelled all upcoming concert appearances, including their September 19 & 20 shows scheduled at the Santa Barbara Bowl to allow time for Yauch's surgery and recovery. The release of the band's forthcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 will also be pushed back.

Paraphrasing from a video statement on BeastieBoys.com, Yauch said, "I just need to take a little time to get this in check, and then we'll release the record and play some shows. It's a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because i was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later."
