We attended a wedding this weekend, a beautiful event! The bride looked like a cupcake. The groom got a call during the ceremony, it was the ice-man, trying to deliver the ice that someone had neglected to order. He hung up on the ice-man and said 'I do". The cupcake bride said "I do too". Everything was pink and white, the sun shone, there was food and fun and music.
I couldn't get over the vows, which the Bride and Groom had written themselves. They waxed poetic about the bonds of matrimony, but I heard the Bombs of Matrimony, and that got me thinking.
I wish these two young creatures something beyond a sunny day, cupcake bride, and the honeymoon.
I wish for them, clear-sight, to see what is surely waiting for them, any day, minute, hour, for they will get 'bombed' by matrimony. I hope they will be prepared with patience, respect for one another, the willingness to let go of certain well-rehearsed lies (for and against) that are told about marriage. So that when one of these 'bombs' go off, they won't be hit with the shrapnel of unrealistic expectations.
May they be able to withstand the impact of unexpected events and respond by jumping into a foxhole with shared purpose. May they wear gas masks to protect them from cruel and regrettable words that are sometimes spoken in anger. Like good soldiers, may they be brothers and sisters in combat, and may they be able to depend on and trust one another when the assault is from without and within.
And after all the noise and chaos, may they be liberated from the stories that are told about marriage, armed with the knowledge that the tragedy of war may lead to the willingness to work for peace. For it is true that "marriage is the only war in which you sleep with the enemy."
To the Bride and Groom!
Thanks to firgs for the mouse-bomb photo.
